I had the pleasure of taking a medicinal plant hike with Mr. Patton in the spring of 2013 in the Bankhead Forrest in northern Alabama. It was a great learning experience. The book is a great combination of education on medicinal plants and humerous and humbling stories of Mr. Patton's friend Tommie Bass. The visual aides provided for identifying the plants are very useful.
Very interesting. Have not finished the whole book yet, but like it very much. My wife met Darryl Patton at a lecture he did for the DeKalb Master Gardeners.
Excellent! Especially if you live in Alabama and the southeast. I saw Tommie Bass in the early 80's(?) on Alabama public television. Such a wealth of information from one person. This book is worth every penny. I'd buy 10 of them if it went back in print. Darryl Patton is the next best thing to Tommie. I'd love to see Darryl write another book akin to this one.
This is the book to have if you are into real herbal medicine. Its practical use and excellent photos make it easy to follow, and enjoy. If you are in Alabama, even better since its a local book. I wish this book would be published again. The gain to our society would be great. If you find a copy, get it. They are few and far between. A diamond in the rough. Darryl brings the life of Tommie Bass and his many years of medicinal work to you in print form.
I've thoroughly enjoyed this book. I love hearing his voice come through the written pages of the book along with his herbal wisdom.I would love to have met him. Such a wealth of wisdom but packaged in a humble man who just wanted to help others.
I hope this book can help his learning and formulas live on through other people.
Darryl Patton knocked it out of the park with this one!!!.... You can't have too many copies of this book.... Doctor Tommie Bass was awesome and Darryl told the story of Tommie so clear that a child could understand!!!.... I got copies everywhere and wouldn't mind having more everywhere else!!!.... GREAT JOB DARRYL PATTON!!!!!
I have this in both paperback and kindle editions. This is one of the best wild herbals out there. It's in the Southern Appalachian Mountain tradition and covers many plants that are in only a few if any other herbals. This book is arranged in alphabetical order, provides a great color photo of each plant, includes identification information, and a description of how it had been traditionally used and prepared.
